What are the options for getting from Malaga Airport to Marbella?

Welcome to the Costa del Sol! Getting from Malaga Airport (AGP) to Marbella is a very common journey, and you have several options depending on your budget, how much time you need, and your comfort level.

Here’s a detailed guide to the best ways to get there:

  1. Direct Bus (The cheapest option)
This is the most popular option for solo travelers or couples looking to save money. The Avanza bus company operates a direct bus from the airport to Marbella Bus Station.

Where to catch it: Just outside the Arrivals Terminal (T3), you’ll see a ticket office and the bus stop directly opposite. Look for the sign that says “Marbella.”

Price: Between €6 and €9 per person (the “Plus” service is slightly more expensive but more comfortable).
Travel time: Approximately 40-45 minutes (depending on traffic).
Frequency: Buses depart approximately every 30-45 minutes throughout the day. There are more frequent departures in summer than in winter. Advantages: It’s very cheap, comfortable (they have air conditioning and a large trunk), and direct.
Disadvantages: It drops you off at the Marbella bus station, which is a bit far from the historic center or your hotel. You’ll probably need to take a taxi or a local bus from there to your final accommodation. It doesn’t operate 24 hours a day (it usually stops around 11:00 PM).

  1. Taxi (The fastest and most flexible option)
If you have a lot of luggage, are traveling in a group, or simply want to get to your hotel door without waiting.

Where to get it: At the official taxi rank right outside Terminal T3. Follow the “Taxi” signs.

Price: The price isn’t fixed; it’s metered, but it’s usually around €70–€85 during the day. At night or on weekends, it can go up to €80–€100.
Time: About 35–40 minutes.

Advantages: Door-to-door service, available 24/7, no need to wait for a schedule.

Disadvantages: Significantly more expensive than the bus. During peak season, there may be a queue for taxis.

  1. Private Transfer / Ride-hailing (Uber, Cabify, Bolt)
Similar to a taxi, but with a fixed price and sometimes more modern cars.

How it works: You must have the app downloaded (Uber, Cabify, or Bolt) or book a private transfer in advance online (companies like Suntransfers or HolidayTaxis).
Price:
Apps (Uber/Cabify): Varies depending on demand (dynamic pricing). It can cost around €60–€90.
Pre-booked private transfer: Usually costs between €70 and €100.
Time: 35–40 minutes.
Advantages: You know the exact price before getting in. If you book a private transfer, the driver will be waiting for you in arrivals with a sign bearing your name (very useful if you don’t speak the language or want to avoid stress).
Disadvantages: If you use the apps, sometimes the airport pick-up point is in a specific parking lot, requiring a slightly longer walk than for an official taxi.

  1. Car Rental (For Total Freedom)
If you plan to travel along the coast (visit Ronda, Nerja, Estepona), this is the best option.

Where: On the ground floor of the terminal or in the airport parking lot. There are many companies (Hertz, Avis, Goldcar, Sixt, etc.).
Price: Highly variable. In the low season, you can find cars for €20/day, but in August, prices can rise to €60-€100/day.
Time: The journey itself takes 40 minutes, but you’ll lose time (30-60 minutes) completing the paperwork and picking up the car.
Advantages: Complete freedom of schedule and movement.

Disadvantages:
Parking in Marbella is difficult and expensive (parking lots are pricey).
You must leave a credit card deposit.
Gasoline and potential tolls (the AP-7 toll motorway is faster than the A-7 motorway and costs around €5-€8 depending on the season).

  1. What about the train? (Important)
There is no train to Marbella. The commuter train (C-1) from the airport only goes as far as Fuengirola.

Combined option: You could take the train to Fuengirola and then a bus to Marbella, but I don’t recommend this if you have luggage, as it will take twice as long and you won’t save much money compared to the direct bus.

Summary: Which one should I choose?
Low budget: The Avanza bus. It’s excellent.
Comfort and speed (Door-to-door): Taxi or private transfer.
I’m going to explore Andalusia: Car rental.
